Course Overview
Broaden your expertise and gain the in-demand skills needed to excel as an assistant in an orthodontic practice. This course is designed for Level II Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists who want to gain exposure to and assist with intra-oral procedures.
This course will briefly review the history of orthodontics, and give an overview of orthodontic records, diagnosis, treatment planning, and proper use of relevant orthodontic instruments.
Upon completion of this dental assistant course, participants will be able to confidently perform four intra-oral procedures referenced in the RCDSO’s Standard of Practice for Level II Dental Assistants*. This includes:
- Placing and cementing bands, brackets, and passive space-maintainers or orthodontic appliances;
- Placing attachments for orthodontic purposes in conjunction with clear aligner therapy;
- Removing bands, brackets, and passive space-maintaining or orthodontic appliances; and
- Taking non-alginate conventional impressions for working models for the fabrication of space-maintaining or orthodontic appliances.

*Some orthodontic procedures can only be performed by dentists or under direct supervision from dentists. This course reviews the orthodontic procedures that can be performed by Level II Dental Assistants under the RCDSO Standard of Practice – Performance of Intra-Oral Procedures that are Not Controlled Acts by Preventive Dental Assistants, Level II Dental Assistants and Registered Dental Hygienists.
